Ten Toes Down: a drill documentary

documentary (11 mins)

When freedom of speech means freedom of music, what happens when the music is no longer free?

the story behind it

Ten Toes Down is a short documentary that explores the enigmatic culture behind drill music and the issues and misconceptions that surround it as a genre and wider cultural wave. The film delves into the issues surrounding the genre and aims to promote a more nuanced discussion around it as a form of art and expose the actions of the police and media who have attempted to villainise it as a form of covert race and class discrimination.

Created within the midst of the pandemic over lockdown in November 2020, this was the first large-scale project I produced. Beginning as a simple look at drill culture within the Bristol area, my research-heavy approach led the film down various different avenues that extended from wider UK drill culture and into the topic of freedom of expression within art.

Working closely with the director and editor, we managed to weave together various storylines and elements of drill culture to create a film that is unique and (hopefully) insightful.
