the story behind it

SCUM is the third and final short film that I produced as part of my time at UWE Bristol. Inspired by Valarie Solonas’ manifesto of the same name, I worked with first-time writer/director Courtney Knowles to craft a dystopian female-dominated world with a poignant story exploring gender politics, post-natal depression, female ostracism and motherhood at its core.

The joy of the film’s production revolved around creating an entirely fictional world on a small budget with equally interesting characters. To create such a world it required six visually distinct locations, an extensive amount of production design with original props, costumes and makeup, a large cast and a whole lot of milk!

The film was a perfect way to wrap up my time at university, going out with a bold and ambitious project routed both in its storytelling and production. The two things I always aim to do.
